As the Background Layout / Line Lead or Background Colour / Paint Lead, you will play a key role in guiding your respective teams within the background department. Reporting to the Background Supervisor, you will oversee the creation and maintenance of background layouts, colour and paint, ensuring they align with the artistic vision, style, and technical requirements of our productions.

Areas of Accountability

Creative Direction

• Assist in interpreting and implementing the artistic vision and style of background layouts (for Layout / Line Lead) and colour/paint (for Colour Lead), ensuring consistency with the show's creative goals.

• Provide creative feedback and direction to team members to enhance background layouts and colour/paint, supporting visual storytelling.

• Collaborate with Animation, Compositing, and Effects departments to integrate background elements seamlessly into final shots.

• Work closely with the Background Supervisor and other department leads to ensure backgrounds support the overall visual style and narrative of the production.

• Address feedback from Directors, Producers, andShowrunners, and oversee revisions and improvements as necessary.

Department Oversight

• Oversee the creation and execution of background layouts and colour/paint, ensuring they meet quality standards, are visually appealing, and align with production timelines.

• Consistently review bids and time for completion of assets to troubleshoot areas of scheduling concern.

• Review and approve background designs and colour palettes/lighting to maintain visual consistency and meet artistic direction.

• Conduct regular reviews and critiques of background layouts and colour/paint to ensure high standards of quality, consistency, and technical execution.

• Communicate effectively with your team and the production team to align on project goals, milestones, and technical requirements related to background layouts and colours.

Team Supervision

• Supervise the background layout team (for Layout / LineLead) and colour/paint team (for Colour Lead), providing mentorship, guidance, and technical direction.

• Manage and coordinate the day-to-day activities of your teams, ensuring efficient workflow and adherence to production schedules.

• Assess and nurture the skills of your team and delegate them work based on their specific strengths.

• Provide clear direction, feedback, and support to team members, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

Skills/Experience

• 7+ years of experience working in 2D animation and 5+ years experience in a similar role.

• Strong portfolio demonstrating thorough understanding of animation principles, character acting, and storytelling, excellent artistic skills and keen eye for detail.

• Willing to supervise teams and facilitate a productive team environment. Prior supervisory experience will be highly regarded.

• Strong relationship builder, interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills

• Reliable, punctual, honest and well-presented.

• Highly motivated, and be able to work with autonomy to solve technical problems.

• Strong time management and organisational skills, working effectively to deadlines.

• Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office Suite and Toon Boom Harmony.
